When I worked as a mental health and addictions counselor at Chrysalis House in Crownsville early in my career, I played the song “Lean on Me” for my clients, because it felt appropriate for that setting. They preferred the song “I Believe I Can Fly.” When I thought about it, that made sense. Most of them had little, if any, experience of having someone they could lean on when they needed support. The independence of flying felt much more appealing.
Can you identify with that? A lot of people have described themselves as “fiercely independent,” because that feels empowering. The thing is that it doesn’t have to be either/or: either you fly, or you lean on someone. You can do both. In fact, having someone to lean on when you need it can give you the power to fly!
If you want to know more about how I use EMDR, Brainspotting, IFS, and sandtray therapy to help my clients learn to both lean on others and to fly, please fill out the form or call or text 410-888-0590.
